Overview:

Abstract: The following thesis details the concept for the conservation and restoration of a painting on canvas by Erich Freiherr von Perfall (1882-1961) which is in the collection of the Foundation of Prussian Palaces and Gardens Berlin/Brandenburg. Along with a technological examination of the various material layers, the main focus of this project is the elaboration and realisation of an adequate conservation and restoration concept specific to this painting. Apart from conservational measures such as a gentle surface cleaning and taping of various surface cracks, certain aesthetic-orientated restoration measures shall be examined and implemented. These are, for example, the filling compoundments and the retouching of previously consolidated areas which "were devoid of pigmentation" on the basis of selected test surfaces. By choosing appropriate materials for these treatments, a further focus of this project is to accomplish all of the intended work, in its progression, as object sensitive as possible. Therefore, the chosen conservation and restoration materials will be coordinated relative to their grade of reversibility and their object compatibility. In addition, the general damage manifestations and the current status of the painted material layers shall be a major consideration in the choosing of the conservation and restoration materials. Combined with a series of essential and preventive conservation measures the long-term preservation of the painting shall be ensured.
