Overview:

Abstract: Mosaics on three memorials created in the early 20th century are covered by this final dissertation. Techniques of execution, states of preservation as well as damage phenomena are investigated and, subsequently, are seen in comparison to each other. Beside other means, the courses of deterioration were investigated by means of scientific analysis to the bedding mortars, salts present and chosen smalts. Due to the knowledge of the very deterioration phenomena at the memorial Duisberg, series of tests in which ways to grout and re-adhere loose smalts were undertaken under laboratory conditions. A range of proprietary products for grouting and injecting were tested for their capability to re-establish adhesion and cohesion and, furthermore, were (re)-assessed in their ageing behaviour. After the evaluation and interpretation of the results gained under laboratory conditions, an initial conservation treatment on the mosaics to the memorial Duisberg was undertaken. Finally, recommendation on possible conservation and restoration methodologies for the memorials Müller and Schneider-Hempel are rounding up the thesis presented.
