Overview:

Abstract: The diploma thesis documents the technological examination with focus on conservation and restoration aspects of a chest from the fraternity of the carpenters´ guild in Brunswick, dated on April 13th, 1725. It is owned by the municipal museum ("Städtisches Museum") of Brunswick. A strong need for treatment exists due to the poor condition of the chest. Therefore this thesis formulates an aim for the conservation and restoration and suggests an appropriate treatment plan for the preservation of the chest. It focuses on the preservation and harmonisation of the varnish by consolidation and reduction of varnish´s opacity. Mechanisms of deterioration and phenomena of varnish damages are introduced. A series of tests is described and an appropriate method for consolidation of the varnish is presented.
