Angelika Graßmann: The 16 Apsarasas at the Rautenstrauch – Joest – Museum, Köln technological investigations, their actual condition and restoration concept Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: Among other things there is an Apsarasas – Ensemble at the Rautenstrauch – Joest – Museum
in Köln. Since ancient times Apsarasas embody female deities and are a constant and popular
part in the Hinduistic mythology. Concrete object of this research are 16 wooden carved
sculptures, which were placed in a building as consoles fulfilling both architectural and
decorative functions. These studies contribute to their geographical, iconographical and artistic
classification. Detailled technological investigations give an accurate survey of the state the figures are actually in. Based on these results – and according to the museums intention to
exhibit the sculptures again – methods of preservation and ways of restoration are discussed
and demonstrated.
