Overview:

Abstract: The painting method of artist Christian Rohlfs (1849-1938) was explored through the examination of selected paintings from the Wallraf-Richartz Museum – Corboud Foundation in Cologne. These works were executed between 1889 and 1906 during which Rohlfs, known for his multifacetted approach had gone through numerous artistic changes which is expressed in the very different style of each of these works. This paper raises the question in which way the execution of these works may be compared to each other. As the examination of Rohlf’s work shows stylistic parallels to the work of other artists and the artistic currents of the time an attempt has been made through study of related literature to establish a comparison between the painting methods of Rohlfs and of his contemporaries.
