Overview:

Abstract: This thesis examines the maintenance possibilities of painted outdoor sculptures considering the Jardin d`émail by Jean Dubuffet in the Kröller-Müller Museum (Netherlands) as an example. This sculpture is composed of concrete and epoxy resin with a black and white paint layer and is accessible to visitors. The examination of artist`s intent, technology, history of conservation/restoration and the current condition form the basis for the development of a treatment proposal. The main focus of this thesis was put on the paint layer. Several paint systems for outdoor conditions were introduced and evaluated for the use on the Jardin d`émail.
