Zusammenfassung: The topic of this thesis is dust as a possible source of moisture and nutrients for mould.
The thesis is structured as follows:
Firstly, background information about the origin, the constituents and the properties of dust are given.
The second part examines the applicability of the ten samples of dust taken from different buildings. For this purpose, nutrient solutions with dust as source of carbon are inoculated with fungi of the genus Aspergillus glaucus in a practical test.
Especially the xero-tolerant (resistant to aridity) fungi of the genus Aspergillus glaucus exist often in buildings which are relatively dusty. Therefore, these fungi seem to be very suitable for this test. Parallel to the aforementioned test, another test analyses the applicability of binding agents by Aspergillus glaucus.
Thirdly, the hygroscopic properties of the samples of dust are tested. The thereby used parameters are the capacity to release water and the capacity to absorb water in mass percent, the activity of water and the equilibrium moisture content of dust.
Finally, the results of the tests are summarised. The applicability of dust by micro organisms can be confirmed. The tested samples of dust also show high hygroscopic attributes. For this reason, it can also be concluded that dust on cultural assets stimulate the growth of micro organisms.
