Zusammenfassung: This research focuses on the architectural surfaces in the english Church St John the Baptist in Ingelsham, Wiltshire. The condition of the masonry and of the wall paintings is characterized by a high concentration of soluble salts as well as by the formation of crusts on the wallsurface. The deterioration is primarily a result of a high concentration of water, which is caused from both infiltration of humidity and hygroscopic salts. The condition of the climate is characterized by the frequent formation of the condensation of water on the wallsurface during the winter and leads to an excessive moisture. Investigations were developed to analyse the effectiveness of the reconversion of gypsum and of the desalination with poultices depending on different lengths of time. The main focus lied on the recovering of porosity and on desalination by using as less moisture as possible. The aesthetic problem of the gypsum therefore was not in the foreground. The results from the experiments done in the laboratory were checked in the church and implimented in a sample area.
