Zusammenfassung: Buildings with brick wall fronts have been tradition in Munich since the Middle Ages. This is caused by the lack of deposits of usable natural stone for building purpose. In the Renaissance and Baroque period wall fronts were plastered. Not until the 19th century, when it was re-introduced by architect and professor FRIEDRICH VON GÄRTNER, the construction of representative buildings was appreciated again. GÄRTNER brought the production of ceramic material to such a high level, that bricks could compete with materials like natural stone both in practical and aesthetical aspects. GÄRTNER`s students used his building methods in an individual way until they became out of date at the end of the century.
The work is about visible brick fronts built between 1830 and 1870 but especially about the kind of groove design. Grooves are analysed in form, colour, surface, material etc.; examples are given to illustrate stages of development. Emphasis is also put on types of brick and structure of facades linked with design of grooves.
