Zusammenfassung: The paper at hand intends to give an account of contemporary society's views on death.
Furthermore it presents a survey of how world religions and denominations - Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Catholizism and Protestantism -deal with dying and death. It mainly concentrates on the restor's/conservator's analysis of the historical development and the realisation of different objects of sepulchral culture. The reader is introduced to a cross section of aspects of present discussions as well as positions with reference to dealing with sepulchral objects.
The decision - making process that justifies dealing with these traditions is analysed as well. This is done by interviewing restorers, art historiens, folklorists etc.. They reflect our contemporary ethical and esthetical appreciation and convictions of sepulchral culture. All kinds of artefakts are taken into consideration but the main emphasis of this paper is put on restoring and peserving mortal remains, corpss and mummies.
