Zusammenfassung: The aim of this thesis is to investigate efflorescence on modern prints and to develop methods of their restoration. In the centre of the investigation were two sets of black and white woodcuts from the 20th century, one by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, the other by Donald Judd. A survey of the published research on efflorescence is followed by the history of the two objects is discribed, a description of their condition and the materials used in printing woodcuts. In addition, the individual technique of the artists was studied and the efflorescence separated from the printed surface is scientifically analysed. Then, the potential of damage caused by efflorescence is evaluated and presumptions on the reason for this phenomenon are supposed. It became obvious that the type of efflorescence on the two sets of woodcuts is different. The set by Donald Judd is afflicated by blooming, which is a special efflorescence of organic components of the binder. According to this diagnosis, common methods of restoration are considered. The different efflorescence found on the Kirchner-set could not be completely enlighetended. Further research methods and conservation treatments on this set are suggested. Finally, a test row was installed in order to grow efflourescence on printed papers. These samples were intended to explain the origin of the described phenomena. Furthermore restoration treatments can be tested on these samples.
