Zusammenfassung: The suitability of contrast enhancing staining for the study of oil containing paint layers with scanning electron microscopy in backscattered electron detection mode was investigated. First, the effect of selected stains was sytematically studied on different polymers with specific functional groups (e.g. PVA, PS). The stains bound to these polymers in a selective and homogeneous way. On the basis of these results, the effects of solvents on the morphology of alkyd paint layers were examined. The staining of these paint films enhanced certain morphologic features, which could refer to the agglomeration of binder components such as degradation products. This contrast is enhanced after treatment with acetone which suggests either an increased density or a higher porosity of the paint film. The results can be extended to oil paint layers. Due to unknown stain binding mechanisms and numerous variables to be considered, the method appears only partly applicable for the investigation of oil containing paint layers.
