Zusammenfassung: The term ‘evaluation’ is a comparatively young term within the field of restoration and conservation. The first part of this Thesis presents the definitions and theoretical context pertaining to said concept of evaluation. This will lay the foundation that allows exemplary ex-post evaluations made to two objects in the city of Lübeck. The aim of this thesis is to show the importance of appropriately carried out evaluations when assessing the effectiveness and lasting effects of restoration measures to wall paintings. An important instrument to evaluate is a periodical done maintenance following an intervention.

The Konsistorialzimmer of Lübeck`s City Library represents an example of a restoration intervention without a follow-up of continuous maintenance. This paper studies the Konsistorialzimmer`s overall condition as it shows today compared to its documented state right after the intervention. The second example of an ex-post evaluation is the restoration and continuous maintenance which was carried out on wall paintings at a private flat in Aegiedienhof, St. Annenstraße 3, also at Lübeck.

The paper concludes by assessing the need for evaluations. It is recognized that expensive restoration interventions often result from a long period of neglect, and could thereby be reduced by periodical evaluations. By acting through minor interventions during early stages of deterioration, continuous maintenance offers the most economically sound and time efficient option. Furthermore, evaluations will analyse long-term issues and offer recommendations for what needs to be done in the future. Every evaluation is a means for preservation and lasting care.
