Zusammenfassung: This master thesis deals with the wall paintings of the protestant church in Datterode located in Hessen in Germany. These paintings date from the early sixteenth century, whereas the church was first mentioned in historical records in 1188. This latter’s structure today reveals a rectangular building (Roman structure) with a five-sided polygonal chancel (late Gothic structure), and a cross rectangular and well fortified appearing steeple in the west.
The thesis is targeted towards the part which deals with the examination of the wall paintings. Materials and construction techniques which were used for the wall paintings are examined and the condition of their preservation is documented. Furthermore the building’s condition and its influence to the wall painting’s damage are discussed.
In addition to that, different and necessary conservation methods are defined through academic analysis and through the implementation of conservation/ restoration materials as well as application methods that obey the objects requirements.
Finally, the thesis concludes with suggestions and advice for the treatments and materials that can be used for the conservation and restoration of the wall paintings.
