Zusammenfassung: The present master`s thesis ties in with the desideratum of research of medieval triumphal crosses and makes a scientificial contribution to their technology. Artefact of the thesis is the wooden polychrome triumphal cross of the catholic parish church St. Philippus and Jakobus in Güsten (North Rhine-Westphalia). The life-sized cor-pus is affixed to old beams. Up to now, the origin of the crucifix is suspected at the begin-ning of 13th century. As shown in the course of the thesis, this dating is – relating to many aspects – disputable.
The first clause of the thesis includes an art historical part, information about the outer field and facts related to the objects history. The restoration under the direction of Ernst Willemsen in the official workshop of the land’s conservator in Bonn 1955/57 is separately described. This restoration is a foundation for the master’s thesis. The main focus is on the following technological study. Its aims are to make accessible the matured materials and to check up and to amend the examinations results during the restoration 1955/57 particularly with regard to the question of the objects origin. The next chapter sums up the objects condition and the damage determination. Based on the previous examination of the sculpture’s technique and material, as well as the condition report, a concept for further treatment is developed. Finally a resumé of the results and a ciritical acclaim of the restoration 1955/57 is given. The master’s thesis closes with a perspective for further researches.
