Zusammenfassung: The reverse glass painting with which this diploma thesis deals is a unique piece of remarkable artistry. Its manufacture differs considerably from popular 19th-century Central European reverse glass painting techniques in the highly-detailed illustration and use of precious materials including gold and silver. An iconographic interpretation of the unusual religious subject is attempted. Conservation and restoration work focuses on the consolidation of the paint layer as damage symptoms had occurred due to earlier restoration treatments. Two silk layers had been attached to the back and caused extensive loss of adhesion between the paint layer and the glass. The silk has to be attached to the glass together with the paint layer to guarantee the conservation of the painting.
