Zusammenfassung: This diploma thesis covers a particular type of mosaics, the so-called mosaico filato which had been introduced in Rome towards the end of the 18th century. In German, this type of mosaic is generally called micromosaics. While in recent years the literature on micro-mosaics was concerned with its art history and technology history, an attempt was made here to pick up this thread and to put it with continuative thoughts into context with restoration and conservation.
The evaluation and augmentation of the current state of knowledge is the concern of part one of this thesis, starting with some observations regarding terminology as well as technological and artistic developments. 46 objects of the Gilbert Collection in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London have been analysed with regards to their particular structure and to the features of micro-mosaics in general. The results of this investigation have been collated in a catalogue.
In the second part, these results have been transferred exemplarily into a conservation and restoration concept and augmented with specific damage-phenomena. For this purpose, a damaged Bonbonniere from the Kunstgewerbemuseum Dresden was made available. Finally, some recapitulatory thoughts are being provided on the still outstanding conservation measures for this object.
