Zusammenfassung: The wall paintings in the small knight’s hall of Stolzenfels castle were executed by Herman Stilke between 1843 and 1847. The knightly virtues in the large image areas, which were painted in fresco technique, are surrounded by polychrome encaustic decorations. The investigation of Stilke’s painting technique on the one hand reveals his methodical way of working, on the other hand his readiness to experiment. This is especially reflected in the gold-leaf grounds, which among other things were finished with sand-coatings. Moisture, microbiology and technical problems in the painting process are the main causes for various damages, which appear on the wall paintings as well as on the polychrome decorations. The investigation of these deterioration processes leads to a concept, which makes first approaches for the conservation of the paintings.
