Zusammenfassung: This Diploma thesis investigates the professional career of the conservator and restorer Grete Brabender (1896-1995) from Cologne. Over a period of 60 years she worked on several thousand sculptures made of wood and stone. Her clients included museums, private owners and curators of historic monuments. Grete Brabender’s zone of activity ranged from Hamburg to Nuremberg. Over the decades she developed her own working techniques and methods. Based on her unpublished works and on interviews with contemporary witnesses and companions an overview of her conservation legacy was established and a catalogue of about 250 restored sculptures was compiled. This research not only contributes to the history of the conservation of sculptures of the 20th century in the Rhein and Mosel region but also it enables her conserved objects to be identified more easily. However, the analysis of Brabender`s conservation techniques will be the task of a further examination.
