Zusammenfassung: Muschelkalk objects are an important historical document of the 20th century in Cologne, as this thesis shows by using historical data and an inventory of objects. The comparatively durable limestone was often used for weathered monuments. This results in damages caused by moisture such as the formation of reliefs and gypsum. The aim of this thesis is to develop a preventive conservation treatment. The measures are based on the features of the stone. The condition of the sculpture of St. Peter of the 'Propstei' in Cologne Cathedral was recorded. Based on specialised literature and research, techniques for reducing the moisture absorption were developed. Mortars and slurries based on ethylsilicate, silica sol and lime were tested. Hydrophobising with silanes/siloxanes was examined.
