The present diploma thesis deals with the characterisation of varnishes of the 20th century on furniture surfaces. First the composition of the selected varnish systems, which are cellulose nitrate-, unsaturated polyester resin-, polyurethane and acid-hardening lacquers, is briefly explained, before their characteristic features are described. Furthermore different possibilities of characterization, as well as several, simple proof methods, are introduced and discussed. These are tested in the practical part of this work using reference and object samples. The results are verified by Fourier-transform-infrared-spectroscopy., installation, monitoring as well as the promotion of outdoor sculptures in Cologne.
