This thesis deals with a visual glossary, by combining descriptive text and pictures, as a method for examination and documentation for detailed recording of original technique and condition. Using the example of wall paintings in the 19th century a visual glossary was created, on the basis of objects situated in the German Rhineland. It contains technical terms in the fields of preliminary drawing, wall painting stratigraphy, preparatory, transfer, painting and decoration techniques, aids and traces of work. In addition the conservation and restoration terminology was discussed.
