Zusammenfassung: Carl Rottmann’s Rom was commissioned by King Ludwig I. as fresco painted on the walls of the arcades in Munich Hofgarten. It is part of the Italian Cycle consisting of 28 landscape paintings (1830-1833). The painting was removed from the wall during the Second World War and restored in parts during the post-war years.
A thorough investigation of Rottmann’ s painting technique was conducted, based on the study of historical sources and the close examination and scientific analysis of the object; also further untreated fragments were partly included.
The ruinous state of the wall painting requires immediate measures. Therefore a conservation concept was elaborated showing the methods of how to remove damages that lead to further deterioration, i.e. the extremely bulged surface of the fresco was successfully flattened.
