Zusammenfassung: Subject of this diploma thesis is a privately owned, 17th century canvas painting - a portrait of presumably the Conversion of St. Paul. Based on an inscription on the decorative frame and on the strechter, it is accredited to the artist, Jacob Jordaens. The present thesis examines the painting not only art historically, but also analysis the artist’s technique. The conservation concept is mainly focused on the painting’s fragile condition, which was strongly influenced by an earlier lining treatment. The adhesive used for the lining, animal glue, caused strong deformations of the canvas and the paint layers. The treatment proposal includes the removal of the present lining and the leveling of the deformations. The removal of the lining is carried out by using fine sandblasting techniques and a q-switched Nd:YAG-laser.
