Zusammenfassung: The banner underwent immense conservation treatments in the past. Due to added textile patches and over-painting its original appearance has changed considerably. Assessment of the structure and condition released new information about the dimension and quality of both the fragment and the secondary additions. Treatments on both sides are gathered to review the banner’s conservation-history.
The main focus of this work lay in the removal of secondary patches and seams which had caused new types of damage in the painted textile. Decay in the cloth including holes and tears needed to be secured without impairing the paint layer on both sides, which meant methods used in conservation of paintings as well as textiles were used. Additionally a new showcase for the display of the banner has been developed.
