Zusammenfassung: „St. Johanniskirche” (Church of St. John) is located in Brandenburg an der Havel. Its choir is bordered by several walled up alcoves. One of them contains a medieval painting. In order to create a direct link between choir and sacristy by wall penetration, major parts of this painting have been destroyed (probably in the second half of the 15th century). Later this breakthrough has been walled up again. In order to save the strongly endangered plaster inside of this alcove on one hand and to get a more precise picture of the substance on the other hand, the alcove has been opened up partly.
The ornamental and figurative painting has been assigned to the third construction stage of this church (first half of 15th century). Due to the painting’s bad condition it wasn’t clearly possible to figure out its exact subject. The investigations of inventory, condition and causes of the painting’s damages have been done to provide the basis for a suitable concept for conservation as well as for presentation of the painting.
