Zusammenfassung: The present Master-Thesis deals with the possibilities and limitations of the dismantling of plated glass and the removal of epoxy resins in nine grisaille stained-glass panels of the Tucher castle in Nuremberg.
The profane grisaille stained-glass of the patricians family Tucher originate to the 16th century and were restored in 1968 in the course of the reconstruction of the Tucher castle which was destroyed in the Second World War. The studio of Frenzel from Nuremberg took care of the stained glass conservation. During this conservation, repair leads were removed which had been used for the fixation of supplemental stained-glass panels. The stained-glass panels were then consolidated again using clear, transparent epoxy-resins to bond broken fragments by a laminate involving protective clear glass and an epoxy-resin interlayer. For this, Araldite® AY 103/HY 951 had presumably been used.
The degradation of epoxy resin had advanced after 45 years to a degree that the stained glass is marked not only by damages like glass decomposition, broken glasses, replacement-pieces and loss to the paint-layers, but also by a strong yellowing and embrittlement of the adhesive coating. These material changes and the aged preservation-material led to a change in the perception of the stained-glass.
The embrittlement of the epoxy resin disturbs not only the aesthetic appearance, but brings about also an element of static unstableness. On account of this fact a dismantling of the relevant panels becomes necessary.
Currently, stained-glass conservator takes the view to leave the plating with all its disad-vantages until an appropriate method for the dismantling is found.
To find suitable options for the dismantling of plated glass, traditional and new methods were investigated via literature-research and through communication with professional colleagues.
In the thesis, the author concentrates on methods like the dismantling by organic solvent and heat as well as by the use of iodine vapor. Additionally, a method of removing the coating with the help of a laser was performed. Finally, the questions as to how epoxy-resin reacts to low temperatures had been investigated.
