Zusammenfassung: Until the beginning of the 20th Century in the central highlands of Sulawesi a long tradition and elaborate technology for manufacturing bark-cloth could develop. Especially festive and ceremonial garments show the wide range of decorations and materials used. Based on an assortment of decorated, dated around 1900 bark-cloth blouses from the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum, a extensive study on materiality and technique of this traditional clothing was carried out. Basically various microscopic and spectroscopic (VIS, FTIR, RFA) methods were used to investigate the blouses in their entirety. The analysis included examination of the tailoring of the blouses, the composition of the bark cloth, surface treatments, colorants and decorative elements. Finally a condition survey and the investigative results form the basis for conservation considerations on long-term preservation of these objects.
