Zusammenfassung: The theory and practice of retouching of table and canvas paintings in the period of the 1950s until the 1970s in Germany is the subject of this work.
This former conception of restauration includes methodological and theoretical positions that are still valid even today.
At the beginning of this thesis, the history of retouching until the middle of the 20th century is shown demonstrating the long tradition of discussion and controversial views about retouching of damaged paintings. Authors and publications as well as theoretical and termonological principles are presented from the time of the 1950s until the 1970s.
The practical part presents different examples of retouching from several German museums. By examples the problems of retouching are discussed. In particular, specific characteristics of the paintings and of the lacunae were investigated in detail.
Different questions about occasions and decision makers for a restoration and a retouching are considered.
Retouching as a very important part of complex restoration concepts decisively matters about the preservation of artwork. Therefore retouching is one of the most important tasks of the restorer.
