Zusammenfassung: This Bachelor - Thesis deals with the polychrome edged marynsculpture from the church St. “Aegidienkirche” in Braunschweig. She has a high pollution degree and demonstrates several damage phenomena, which is why she was chosen as a characteristic exhibit.
For further analyzation the use of a scaffold was necessary. It was lend from the faculty of “Bauen und Erhalten” from the course “Gefasste Holzobjekte und Gemälde” at the University for applied sciences and Art in Hildesheim and set up inside the church on 13. November 2014. The examination began during the following days.
First of all information about the near surroundings of the marynsculpture were gathered. Therefore, the topographical position, as well as the history of the “Aegidienkirche” needed additional investigation. The description of light and air situation in the church complements these studies. Moreover, the sculpture was assigned to the baroque era. This was justified on the basis of the history of polychrome technology as well as a comparison object. Last part is the discussion of the object and restoration history.
The primary part of this work is the sculptures polychrome technology examined and present-ed to get an overview about the production process. Then the found conditions of the handle and the socket are described and analyzed. On the basis of all test results, a conservation con-cept is developed, which includes the cleaning and consolidation of the partly fragile socket. The goal of this concept is to put the sculpture in a state in which it can be preserved for a longer period without further intervention.
