Zusammenfassung: Bleaching in paper conservation is a nearly entirely cosmetic operation that generally does not improve the permanence or durability of paper. Hence, the objectives of bleaching are to diminish paper discolouration which severely inter-feres the visual integrity or the “original tone” of an object. Nowadays it only applies to a small group of objects within our cultural heritage on paper. However, in paper conservation bleaching mostly concerns the treatment of objects of aesthetic value, which are often highly prized works of art on paper. It is amazing that until now the evaluation of bleaching interventions by conservators is done visually and limited on the characterization of the achieved paper tonality with inaccurate terms, such as a “warm”, “acceptable” or “near to the original paper tone”.
Goal of this thesis was, to evaluate whether colour measurements applied on test papers, could enable conservators to create a more accurate and reproducible characterization of changes in brightness and paper-tonality resulting from se-lected treatments. Two oxidizing bleaches - calcium hypochlorite (Ca(ClO)2, po-tassium permanganate (KMnO4) and one reducing bleach (NaBH4) have been applied to test papers following a standardized treatment sequence including the involved pre- and after-treatment operations, i.e. humidification rinsing and drying. Colour measurements were performed with a spectral photometer “spectro-guide sphere gloss” of BYK-Gardner GmbH at 180 different reading points, each with a diameter of 11 mm on 30 samples. The data gained until now support expectations that a reproducible evaluation and characterization bleaching treatments is principally possible, although considerable research is necessary for the development of a validated measuring procedure.
