In autumn 2010 finds of a warrior’s grave from the early La Tène period were recovered in a rescue excavation campaign taking place in Gemeinlebarn/Lower Austria. This work focuses on the conservation of an iron sword and its scabbard, which is covered with mineralized textile remains as well as traces of wood and leather. Before developing the conservation concept, a reconstruction of the technological composition is carried out. It is based on analyses of the materials used and followed by the investigation of their specific deterioration mechanisms in the soil. Due to the combination of iron, bronze and organics on one object, limitations are set to the use of common conservation strategies. Especially the cleaning of original surfaces demands a trial of conventional techniques, which are compared to the method of laser cleaning. The practicability of sodium hydroxide-based desalination baths has also to be proved.
