Zusammenfassung: This master’s thesis deals with impurities concerning paper objects and the options of its removal. A central question is whether particular impurities have to be removed for reasons of material protection or probably other reasons. On the basis of selected individual graphic works of art on paper from the Albrecht Haupt collection of the Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB) Hannover, it is investigated whether there is the need for further cleaning actions beyond the electrostatic cleaning that has already been determined. For the assessment of the cleaning effectiveness, colour measurements are carried out to detect color changes. Selected, predominantly adherent contaminants on the objects and impurities that have migrated into the paper are documented by imaging techniques using a digital microscope camera (USB microscope) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). A technical investigation of the impurities or contamination agents is carried out using the energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) combined with SEM, as well as micro chemical analysis. The impurities are classified in a catalogue. The catalogue operates as a tool for the identification of impurities and shows a possible damage potential as well as corresponding treatment options.
