Zusammenfassung: The master thesis is focused on the documentation, investigation and preservation of the sandstone
decoration on the tiers the temple Ta Keo in Cambodia. The quality and execution of the rich sculptural work
account the high crafting and artistic skills of the advanced civilisation of the Khmer. The exceptionality of
the occurrence at the temple Ta Keo make these decoration forms especially worthy of protection. The
treasured decoration of the sandstone surfaces are highly endangered by a very com-plex deterioration
condition. The extensive investigation, documentation and mapping of the state of preservation and the
deterioration patterns, of the building material sandstone and the alterations caused by weathering allows
the formulation of a damage diagnosis. Another focus of the thesis is the development of a preservation
concept for the stone decorations on the base of the previous investigations, the further development of
conservation materials and the application techniques. The developed materials and complex conservation
methods have been implemented at representative sample areas in order to test, validate and evaluate
capacity of the conservation concept.
