Zusammenfassung: This master thesis deals with art technological studies on the paintings of the Ger-man Expressionist painter
Heinrich Nauen (1880- 1940).
The aim of this study was to provide a knowledge base on the materials used, the painting technique and
the working process of this artist.
One part of the study focuses on the evaluation of selected written sources on Nauen. In the other part the
results of the investigation of 32 paintings on textile support are shown. These were investigated with nondestructive
an minimally inva-sive, physical analysis methods. Therefore surface studies under visible light
and UV radiation were conducted. Additionally IR-reflectography was applied on 17 se-lected paintings.
Besides that reflected light- and polarised-light microscopy were used to determine the material of the
textile supports. To gain information on the colorants used in the paint layers, X-ray-fluorescence analysis,
energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Raman-spectroscopy were used. The investigation results extend
the present knowledge of the artistic work.
In order to clarify to what extent the collected information can serve for the authenti-cation of the paintings
by Nauen, they are compared in an excursus with a painting forgery.
