Zusammenfassung: The uncovering removal and restoration of the painting „Nymph with Amor“ (end 18th / beginning 19th century) by Josef Grassi is in the focus of this Thesis. The artwork belongs to the collection of the Lindenau-Museum in Altenburg, Germany. The painting as an aesthetic and historic document was significantly altered as a result of two previous restorative interventions during the 20th century. Collectively, two coatings, five layers of overpaint and four different fillings could be identified. Furthermore, a format change and a lining were carried out.
Within the theoretic part of this Thesis these previously performed executions were analyzed and interpreted. Meanwhile, the practical task comprised the removal of the two varnishes, four overpaintings and all fillings. The result of this approach constitutes a fundament for the comprehensive reconstitution of the aesthetic legibility of this painting.
