This mass- appliques, also called "compo", were made of the main ingredients chalk, animal glue, oil and resin, mostly colophony. The picture frames were the main application area of compo in the 19th century.
The diploma work is devided into two parts. Part one describes the technique of ornamental appliques and the technique of gilding and coating of six original frames of the 19th century and compares them with literary sources.
The second part contains the conservation of a picture frame, dated 1835. The aim was the reconstruction of the original mass and the completation of the lost ornaments of the frame. So traditional techniques were checked to use them in the conservation of original frames today.
