Zusammenfassung: The subject of this thesis is the restoration and conservation of a clock face, which is part of a 18th
century grandfather’s clock, with particular consideration of the problems that occurred during the
retouching of an original fire‐silvering of the brass‐surface.
For this purpose, several options of re‐silvering or retouching of the silvered surface respectively, and
their tenability from the point of view of modern restoration ethics are being discussed.
Furthermore, this thesis gives a review of the work carried out, as well as an assessment of the
results concerning its objectives, which was not only to restore the correct operation of the clock but
also to restore the correlation between the clock itself and the clock face. Even though this thesis
only deals with the clock face as such, it has to be seen in the context of the whole grandfather’s
clock, consisting of clockwork, clock face and corpus.
The concluding discussion is concerned with the issue of the particular type of retouching examined
in this thesis, and the question whether there would have been other ways of proceeding. In addition
several test series, which had served for achieving the accomplished arrangements, are being
analysed.
