Zusammenfassung: The closer examination of the materials showed that the can body is made of the machined case of a
tiger shell. The metal construct from the mounting ring and cover plate is composed of different
soldered copper alloys. The microscopic examination of the mounting ring showed gold residues in a
ring gap. That is the reason for the assumption that the mounting ring was originally gilded.
Due to non‐detectable traces of the work is it not possible to reconstruct completely the steps of
production.
The study of history of art background revealed no relevant findings. The engraving JB (HB or IB)
1789 describes a possible year of production, but there is not an earlier one excluded. A few
comparable examples could be found under the name snuff boxes. Whether the object can found
such usage as a snuff box, but it cannot be said definitively.
In the course of its use, the can body suffered a damage, so the snail shell was broken into several
fragments. These were composed roughly and breaks and missing sections were closed with a putty
of linseed oil and chalk.
On consideration and evaluation of the damage, the object proofed to have lost much of its original
aesthetic, because of corrosion on the mounting ring and the repair. After weighing the measures, a
cleaning of the shell housing, a removal of corrosion products and deposits on the mounting ring and
the retouching of the dark, soiled putty.
The aim of this concept is that the object regains some of its original state and aesthetics. In aspect
of a presentation in a museum, it will be necessary to make the object accessible to the exhibition
piece.
