Zusammenfassung: The topic of the Diploma thesis includes the conservation of a Chinese lantern with framed metalworks.
At the beginning, these metal‐works are identified as Wuhu iron paintings (Wuhu Tiehua).
Because of a lack of scientific literature about this handcraft, the paper includes a research about the
historical and technological development of Wuhu Tiehua.
Within the technological examination of the lantern, the metalwork could be identified as an
imitation of Wuhu Tiehua. The decoration is prepared by forming iron sheets which are filled with an
alloy from tin and lead. The coating of the metalwork is prepared by using the traditional recipe for
Wuhu Tiehua and the addition of iron particles.
The conservation‐related problems include a wide range of damages caused by mechanical
influences. These damages are also intensified by insufficient handcraft techniques. The iron particles
are evidence for a wide corrosion at the coating. Although, the combined materials metal and silk is
causing further damages due to their alternating influence on each other.
At least all conservation‐related measures are carried out at one of the four frames.
