Zusammenfassung: The subject of the diploma thesis is a multi-layered wall painting fragment from Enns (formerly Lauriacum). The fragment has the dimensions of approx. 130 x 70 cm. According to coins, its formation dates back to the period between the 2nd and 4th century AD.
It was excavated en bloque in 2001, along with other partly large-scale wall fragments. Its three superimposed layers of design are partially separated from each other. Of these, the two upper layers are decorated polychromic. After the exposing from the block and the implementing of the first conservation measures in 2012/13, the diploma thesis focused on the technical examination of the three design layers as well as on the development of a concept for further conservation and restoration treatment based on the assessment of condition and damage. This was accompanied by tests for bonding of the fragments, as well as surface cleaning or reduction of superimposed sinter crusts.
In prospect of a planned exhibition in the Kunsthistorischen Museum Wien and the Upper Austrian State Exhibition 2018 in Enns, a concept for presentation was developed. The multi-layered and partially separated layers presented a special challenge. The context to the other fragments from the excavation was also considered. In the course of the diploma thesis the measures were implemented on the object.
