Zusammenfassung: This paper is intendet to check to what extent an examination, an analysis of the state and a suggestion of treatment can take place without contact to the object. This is done using the example of an 18th century atlas from the Hildesheim city archive. Photos taken by the head of the archive serve as the basis for the examinations. This simulates an order for examination and restoration, which has to take place contactless. In addition to that, it is discussed, in what extent requirements for the photos can be established.
Through literature research the design of the cover, the stitching, the paper, the printing technique, the illumination und the microbial infestation where examined. Thanks to temporal classification and reordering of specific photos many materials and methods could be identified. From the information gained, not just a treatment was deduced, but also other examination methods were suggested, to clarify important additional data. These data are needed to determine, whether some of the suggested treatment can be executed or not. For that cases alternative treatments were recommended.
Finally, it is discussed under which conditions an examination can be realised without contact to the object and which requirements the photos have to comply with.
