Zusammenfassung: This thesis focuses on the contrast between a barely explored mural and its extensively modified version of today. Three hundred years and numerous layers of whitewash separate the two representative phases: the original mural and its modifications. It is desirable to further enhance the visibility of the original mural. During the renovation of the building, the mural was rediscovered and partially uncovered. One of the previous owners completed modifications where parts were missing. For his descendants, his work has a special personal significance. Therefore, an evaluation of different techniques for handling the modifications is an essential part of this thesis. Historical and analytical data about the mural have been collected to justify decisions for its further restoration.
The work in a pilot area has shown that the original mural doesn’t require the modifications in most of the cases. Removal of the whitewash in areas which had been cleaned incompletely and retouches where needed are sufficient to create a coherent appearance. The personal memorial value can be maintained through specific integration of some of the modifications while respecting the original characteristics of the mural.
