Zusammenfassung: The south facade of the “Gurker Dom“ in Carinthia has been remained untreated in recent times. Therefore, an intact evolved exterior that reveals information on the early history of this important monument, including surface treatments and changes in design, is preserved. In this diploma thesis a concept of conservation is developed, which is not an alignment with the other facades which were restored in the late 20th century. Instead it aims the preservation of the historical features on the facade, meeting the esthetical demands at the same time. The newly discovered calcium oxalate patina, a superficial protection on marble which can be found on sites around the Mediterranean basin in particular, is unique in its abundance and size for Austria and must therefore be preserved.
