Zusammenfassung: The former decorative floor made of gypsum plaster with inlay decoration of St. Ludgeri Church in Helmstedt adorned the area in front of the raised choir area of the building from 1059. The original picture program is only known in parts and shows, among other depictions, the Seven Wise Men of antiquity with banners. During an exploratory excavation in 1886, the floor from around 1180 was rediscovered. Since the most recent conservation in 2019 and 2020, four of the Seven Wise Men of Antiquity with banners have been displayed in two pairs of figures as assembled fragments embedded in quartz sand in two showcases. The approx 2.5 x 2.5 m size fragments are exhibit in the northern aisle of Church in Helmstedt. The by far much larger and unedited part of the Helmstedt fragments is stored in the depot of the Archaeological Collection of the Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum in Wolfenbüttel.
The desire for an inventory and, if possible, virtual assembling of the fragments already arose during the expert discussion in the run-up to the measures in Helmstedt on March 3rd 2018. The aims of the master´s thesis are the assessment and investigation of the fragmente and initial considerations on the virtual assembling of selected fragments from the collection stored in the depot in Wolfenbüttel. A selection of the inventory in Wolfenbüttel was inventoried and scientific investigated. The work technology was compared with the investigations in Helmstedt and with incrusted gypsum screeds from the 12th and 13th centuries. All results were recorded and visualized in a database. The thoughts about the virtual assembling took place with the exemplary implementation of photogrammetry and the request to the "DigiGlue" project. The results developed in the context of the Master´s thesis can be applied to the entire flooring fragments.
