Zusammenfassung: Organic solvents are usually applied directly onto surfaces of art objects to remove dirt, discolorings, coatings, varnishes, overpaintings, and laminations. The effectiveness of organic solvents and water can be modified when they are made into gels, pastes, and compresses. The main focus of this study lies in organic solvent gels, especially those prepared with the polyacrylic acid CARBOPOL. The first theoretical part of the study gives a summary of the materials used for compresses and pastes applied in conservation and their special properties, and provides descriptions of the various swelling substances hitherto used for solvent gel preparations. The second part of the study compares the effectiveness of liquid solvent mixtures with those of their gels. It also includes the introduction of a method to remove laminations on paper prints using CARBOPOL gels. The migration properties and the aging of amines contained in CARBOPOL gels are also studied.
