Zusammenfassung: The Herder Room belongs to an ensemble of similar representative rooms dedicated to other poets which are presented in a museum in the town castle of Weimar. There is a frieze of wall paintings with scenes of works of J.G. Herder. The wall paintings were made in about 1847 by the Nazarene artist Gustav Jäger. During the diploma thesis research was conducted into the artist himself and also into the Nazarenes as well as to specialities of the technique of painting and representation referring to the art history background of the 19th century. A concept of measures to preserve and restore the damaged wall paintings was also developed. The concept was based on the analysis of the conditions of the room. The concept was applied to the mural of theology & humanity. The foundation of preservations and restorations was the analysis of cause of damage. Therefore different analyses of the material, microbiology and also of the atmosphere of the Herder Room were performed. The emphasis of the concept is based on conservation so that all restoration measures had the aim of respecting the original work and keeping its authenticity. There attention was drawn to the atmospheric problems in order to suggest ways of improving the microclimate of the room.
