The subject of this paper is the conservation and preservation of a cloth-backed chromolithograph stretched on wooden dowels from the end of the 19th century. Improper storage under changing climatic conditions and the combination of the materials - paper, textile, wood and a water-soluble varnish- caused tension on the object. As a consequence damages like tears, losses and splitting of material layers resulted. The paper describes the cultural historic classification and the conservation documentation. It also examines important aspects of varnish on paper artifacts, particularily water-soluble coatings. The paper contains a literature based research on the use of coatings on paper surfaces and historical recipies. The author completes the text with investigations and own examinations on the varnish material gum arabic.
