Zusammenfassung: Efforts in conservation are aimed to preserve the authenticity of the object and to decontaminate early toxic wood preservatives. Decontamination can be done active if the toxic wood preservative is not fixated. A research project on treatment of cultural objects that have been contaminated by former use of hazardous chloroorganic biocides is sponsored by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU). At present the possibilities of decontamination of DDT and Lindan as well as other chloroorganic biocides are being researched at the Rathgen-Forschungslabor in Berlin. The efforts are focused on thedetermination of highest possible biocide decontamination rates while not allowing uncontrolled movement of the remaining biocide. This thesis as one part of the project supports the development of technology for the detoxification of contaminated wooden artefacts by use of washactive systems. In the research process a number of tests are carried out on the characteristics of the detoxification emulsion and decontamination experiments. According to present results the washactive systems can bind DDT and thereby reduce the concentration of the biocide in the wood matrix significantly. The choice of the right technology of detoxification for this process is the key to success.
