Zusammenfassung: The subject of this dissertation is the systematic documentation of a unique collection of tools – in particular, woodworking tools gathered over the last 50 years – of the renowned German scholar of traditional trades, Dr Guenther Heine (Aumühle, Hamburg). The collection was recorded photographically as well as tabularly and classified into specific groups of tools. A taxonomy has thereby been created which allows for the recognition, expansion and classification of special group of tools.
The collection comprises over 600 individual objects (woodworking tools only). Of particular importance is Dr Heine’s comprehensive collection of planes, as he worked on the tool and plane manufacturers of 19th century Hamburg in his (unpublished) dissertation. Besides “common” woodworking tools, the core of the collection is formed by a variety of regional and country-specific tools.
The first part of this dissertation is exclusively devoted to the life and work of Dr Guenther Heine, in which his collection of tools and his research into their history is of greatest importance. The second part of this work presents the exhaustive documentation and study of all the historic tools and other auxiliary instruments in the collection, in the form of photographs, descriptions, measurements, materials and functions. It includes detailed descriptions of rare tools, which are nearly unknown today; together with a description of the tools designed by Dr Heine himself. In some cases he has built them after historic models, in others he has modified and improved them. The descriptions are accompanied by Dr Heine’s own comments, wherever they appear appropriate.
The goal of this dissertation – in addition to the documentation – is, above all, the examination of rare, historic, and perhaps little known tools, along with the documentation of their function to make them fully comprehensible in the future.
